The Transportation and Storage Subcommittee of the Blue Ribbon Commission (BRC) on America’s Nuclear Future published its draft report in June 2011. IEER submitted Comments on July 1, 2011, urging the BRC to abandon the idea of recommending the creation of consolidated interim storage facilities for spent fuel from nuclear reactors. IEER instead recommended the safer option of Hardened On Site Storage (HOSS) of all aged spent fuel and low density pool storage for the remainder, while awaiting the development of one or more permanent deep geologic disposal facilities.
